Ernest Hemingway Festival: Sept. 20–23
The years that novelist Ernest Hemingway spent in Paris will be
the focus of this year’s event in Sun Valley, where the author lived
off and on for two decades before his death in 1961. The author’s
grandson, John Hemingway, will deliver the keynote address, entitled “Hemingway in Paris: the Crazy Years.”
The festival will include a book fair, a guided tour of
“Hemingway Hideouts,” readings, and a dinner at Ernest
Hemingway’s home. Scholars will give talks on Hemingway and
the expatriate community in Paris in the

Nevada Day: Oct. 27
“Mysteries of Nevada—Area 51” will be the theme of this year’s
parade in Carson City to celebrate the admission of Nevada to statehood. UFO encounters, Elvis sightings and rumors of secret government programs in a remote area of Nevada are among the mysteries that may be explored by parade entries. The parade is at 10

Music from the early 1900s to the late
1940s will be featured in this jazz festival that
attracts about 6,000 people annually to Sun
Valley. Performances are presented at a number of locations in the Sun Valley area.

Guard Dixie Band, Forever Plaid, Pearl Django,
the Hot Tomatoes Dance Orchestra, and the

Mt. Angel Oktoberfest: Sept. 13–16
More than 350,000 people come every year
to the rural community of Mt. Angel, 40 miles
south of Portland, to experience Bavarian food
and entertainment. The event offers 60 food
chalets, wine and beer gardens, free entertainment, a classic car show and sports events,
including golf and volleyball tournaments. A

Oregon has 51 covered bridges, the most
west of the Mississippi River, and that fact is
