IMPROVING YOUR RV DECOR
What are people doing these days to upgrade their RVs?
Many are replacing carpeting with solid-surface floors and others
are installing big high-definition TVs, according to the owners of
Dave and LJ’s RV Interior Design in Woodland, Washington.
Installing new flooring and furniture, redoing cabinets to accommodate new TVs, adding new lighting, recovering upholstery and
replacing trim are just some of the services that brothers Dave and LJ
Ast offer at their store. They do everything from minor upgrades to
complete makeovers.
The brothers have been involved in the RV remodeling industry
for most of their lives. They worked in the family business until their
early 40s, and then decided to venture on their own by opening an
RV interior design center with a large showroom, a four-bay heated
service facility and a parking area big enough to accommodate a
dozen or more rigs. The location is just off Interstate 5 at exit 22 in
Woodland.
Although they have been open only a little more than a year,
Dave Ast said some customers are already returning for their second
purchase. Referrals account for much of their business.
Dave said he has learned over the years that the best approach in
working with customers is to “listen to what people say, ask questions, and never try to sell them something they don’t want.”
What most customers do want, he said, is the same comfort in
their RV that they are accustomed to at home. Many factory-installed
interior furnishings simply don’t meet customer standards, so there
is a demand for upgrades. Dave and LJ meet that need by offering
high-quality products from top brands such as Flexsteel furniture
and Mohawk, Wilsonart, Johnsonite and Flexitec flooring.
The store’s flooring section offers an expansive selection of carpet, vinyl, tile, hardwood, laminate and rubber step treads in an array
of styles and colors. Dave says the trend in flooring has been away
from carpets and toward solid-surface floors in high-traffic areas.
Ease of care makes tile, laminate, hardwood or vinyl a good choice in
any area that is hard to keep up, he says. Radiant-heated flooring is
another popular option that can be installed under most hard surfaces. It can achieve a floor temperature of about 85 degrees, eliminating cold floors in the winter.
The showroom offers a full line of Flexsteel RV furniture.
Captain’s chairs, sofas, recliners and rockers are on display, and there
are hundreds of fabric, ultra-leather and leather choices.
Freestanding dining sets and tables are available to try out. A large
stock on hand makes same-day installation possible. Special orders
are also available.
Most RVs have trim that matches the furniture. When you buy
new furniture, Dave and LJ’s can recover or rebuild trim to match it.

They also can redo window
treatments, dining chairs and
cushions to complement the
new décor.
Many people want to replace
their old tube-type TVs with HD
flat screens, and Dave and LJ’s
can help accomplish this. They
can remove the old TV and
mount the new one, modifying
or rebuilding the cabinet if necessary. If you bring in your rig
before you shop for a new TV,
they can examine the TV area
and give you size perimeters
before you buy. Dave says most
modifications can be done in a
day or two at the most, and the
result is a factory-installed
appearance. ■
